Communications and Marketing Graduate Assistant (starting Fall 2023)

Position

The Scanlan Center for School Mental Health invites applications for a Graduate Assistant for the 2023-2024 academic year (August 16, 2023 – May 14, 2024) at .50 effort at an average of 20 hours/week. 

Description

The Graduate Assistant will work to raise the visibility of the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health’s services, programming, events, and mission through marketing, strategic communications, and content development. Specifically, the individual in this role will 1) develop dynamic written (i.e., feature stories, web/social copy, email messaging) and visual (i.e., Stories, Reels, videos, graphics, etc.) content for campaigns and projects; and 2) support workflow (i.e., manage editorial calendars, website maintenance, and reporting).

Applicants must be strong communicators (in-person and electronically), ideators, problem-solvers, and task initiators. Applicants also need to demonstrate a commitment to producing high-quality work and maintaining UI and Center brand standards. 

Additional responsibilities may include: 

  • Providing social media coverage for the 2023 Iowa BEST Summit as well as special events, meetings, and workshops
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to inform content strategy, audience segmentation, paid social campaigns, and opportunities for engagement 
  • Adapting research, reports, and data for social media consumption 
  • Monitoring best practices and trends in organic and branded social media
  • Collaborating with other University of Iowa and College of Education colleagues to share ideas and optimize content reach
  • Photography and video
  • Other special projects as needed 

Requirements

Must be a current student working toward a master’s or doctoral degree in mass communication, strategic communication, marketing, business, communication studies, film and video production, education, public health, health and human physiology, sport and recreation management, or a related field. Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram plus graphic design/video editing tools is required. Preference will be given to those who have either formal or informal experience creating social media videos such as Reels, Live, Stories, and short- or long-form videos.

Base wages are determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and UI local 896/COGS.
