Event Details

You are in your office, thinking about a recent interaction with a student that leaves you troubled.  Many things run through your mind.  Is this a big deal?  Should I call someone?  Can I help this student?  Should I even get involved?

In our current time of significant change in campus work and life, getting involved can feel intimidating.  Our students struggle with anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, self-harm, physical illnesses, family problems, financial concerns, loss, and others.  Having any minoritized identities can exacerbate these struggles. This can leave students distressed and seeking your help.

This workshop assist staff, faculty, post-docs, TAs, and others responding to students in distress by providing practical skills to navigate these challenging and often emotional interactions.  This workshop provides the signs of what distress looks like, ideas of what to do and what not to do, and simple language to assist with having the confidence to act when a student is struggling. We want to do the best we can when helping students and having practical skills and ideas supports our efforts.

Participants can choose to join this session in person or via Zoom.

On-Campus Location: Lindquist CenterTLC PDA (N110 LC), 240 South Madison Street, Iowa City, IA 52240

Zoom: If you choose to attend virtually, we will email you the Zoom link the day prior to the event.
