Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic Grand Opening!

We are thrilled to announce the official opening of the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic this fall! We will begin accepting referrals after the 2022 Labor Day holiday.  

The mission of the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic is to increase access to mental health care for PK-12 students, educators, and school staff. We will work with Iowa’s PK-12 school districts, Area Education Agencies (AEAs), and Iowa mental health systems to provide crisis services and direct clinical care.  

What Services Are Offered? 

Crisis Services: We will offer school crisis debriefing and support following a traumatic event impacting a school or district, such as a sudden death or a natural disaster. We will further offer short-term individual counseling support for individuals requiring additional care following a crisis event, as well as professional consultation and support for school-based crisis teams. 

 Short-Term Individual Counseling Services: We will offer time-limited, individual counseling services for students, educators, and school staff with identified mental health needs. We are prioritizing care for individuals in rural communities who otherwise have limited access to services, individuals who face financial barriers to accessing mental health care, individuals with acute needs following a crisis, and individuals in need of bridge support while waiting to be connected to a long-term provider.  

Most individual services will be offered via telehealth, although in-person services are available to individuals who are local to the Iowa City area and wish to be seen in our office.  

Additional services are in development and will be announced when they become available. 

How are Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinical Services Accessed? 

AEA staff, school administrators, and school mental health professionals may refer students, educators, or school staff for services offered through the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic by emailing us at scsmh-clinic@uiowa.edu.

Once a referral has been accepted, the clinical staff will follow up with the potential client and/or their guardian (if the potential client is a minor) to discuss opportunities through the clinic and complete the intake process.
