Event Details

You are in your office, thinking about a recent interaction with a student that left you troubled. Many things are running through your mind. Is this a big deal? Should I call someone? Can I help this student myself? Should I even get involved?

Be prepared and confident to support students in distress with this new Master Class, led by Barry Schreier, Ph.D., director of higher education programming for the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health.

In this 4-part training, faculty and staff will learn:

  • Language and practical skills to help navigate challenging interactions
  • Signs of what distress looks like
  • How to gauge student emotionality
  • Ideas of what to do and what not to do
  • Simple language to assist when students struggle

When: Thursdays; March 21, 28 and April 4, 11 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Where: Jones Commons, University of Iowa College of Education Lindquist Center.

Plan to attend all four sections.

“I am a new employee at the University of Iowa, and I can honestly say this has been one of my favorite experiences here so far. This session would not have been what it was without the energy Barry brought to the session. The fact that he was so passionate in teaching about this, and empowered us as participants to push ourselves to think of all the ways we could incorporate this into our daily work was awesome.”
