Working with Students in Distress Masterclass

You are in your office, thinking about a recent interaction with a student that left you troubled. Many things are running through your mind. Is this a big deal? Should I call someone? Can I help this student myself? Should I even get involved?

Be prepared and confident to support students in distress with this new Master Class, led by Barry Schreier, Ph.D., director of higher education programming for the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health.

In this 4-part training, faculty and staff will learn:

• Language and practical skills to help navigate challenging interactions
• Signs of what distress looks like
• How to gauge student emotionality
• Ideas of what to do and what not to do
• Simple language to assist when students struggle

When: Thursdays; March 21, 28 and April 4, 11 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Where: Jones Commons, University of Iowa College of Education Lindquist Center.
