University of Iowa Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral student Tevin Middleton was recently awarded funds to research how bolstering school mental health can improve minority student matriculation in the K-20 educational continuum. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation granted Middleton $124,000 through its Health Policy Research Scholars program.
The opportunity was available open nation-wide, and included a rigorous application process. Middleton praised the College of Education's Grad Success Center and Grant and Research Services Center for helping him through each phase of his application process.
While pursuing his doctoral degree, Middleton has also gotten involved with the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. Serving the team as a Workforce Expansion Trainee, Middleton has offered consultations to rural school counselors on ways to integrate school mental health into their daily routines, and contributed to Imagine Iowa and BEST+Well, two mental health programs that bolster mental literacy in Iowa’s schools.
