Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic

The mission of the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic is to increase access to mental health care for PreK-12 students, educators, and school staff. We work with Iowa PreK-12 school districts, Area Education Agencies (AEAs), and Iowa mental health systems to provide post-crisis services and mental health support.

In preparation for summer, beginning April 1, the SCSMH Clinic will only accept new individual short-term counseling referrals for clients aged 14 and older. We will continue to accept new referrals for educators throughout the summer. We will resume accepting new referrals for students aged 10+ in August 2024.

The Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic is not a 24/7 crisis service, and our phone and email messages are not monitored for crisis response. If this is an emergency or someone is in imminent danger, please call 911 and/or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

Services Offered

In preparation for summer, beginning April 1, the SCSMH Clinic will only accept new individual short-term counseling referrals for clients aged 14 and older. We will continue to accept new referrals for educators throughout the summer. We will resume accepting new referrals for students aged 10+ in August 2024.

We offer virtual short-term individual counseling services to students aged 10+ and PreK-12 school staff. Short-term counseling is appropriate for addressing specific goals and, if needed, offering short-term support as the client prepares to transition to a longer-term mental health provider. In an effort to serve clients who face barriers to accessing mental health resources, we have organized individual counseling slots as followed:

Rural Services

Short-term individual counseling for clients who live in rural Iowa and do not have access to local mental health providers

Barrier Services

Short-term individual counseling for individuals facing barriers to accessing mental health services

Bridge Services

Short-term individual counseling for clients while they are waiting to get connected to their long-term provider

Educator Empowerment Group
